Amendment is similar to Senator Lee’s that did not pass in the Senate.
Representative Chip Roy of Texas introduced an amendment to the Respect for Marriage Act on Friday. The amendment would provide legal protections for businesses and persons who believe in traditional marriage. Senator Mike Lee of Utah had proposed a similar amendment to the act in the Senate, but it was not approved.
Some have expressed concerns about the reach of the Respect for Marriage Act and the potential for the Justice Department to sue Americans who oppose same-sex marriage.
The amendment offered by Representative Roy would explicitly prohibit the federal government from taking “any discriminatory action against a person, wholly or partially on the basis that such person speaks, or acts, in accordance with a sincerely held religious belief, or moral conviction” that marriage is between one man and woman. The right to sue the government would also be granted to Americans whom the government has targeted because of their religious beliefs about marriage.
Representative Roy stated, “Unless amended, the so-called Respect for Marriage Act will fundamentally alter the relationship between faithful Americans and the federal government.”
